Billy 2006 - Barnbougle, Tas, March 3-5
Without
any hesitation, I declare this, the 11th Billy Barule,
the best ever. Barnbougle
surpassed its hype and reputation. Indisputably it was the
best and most memorable course ever for a Billy tournament
especially the 5th which served up the most spectacular
sweeping views of the ocean and rugged windswept dunes. So
beautiful that Bernie could not resist the temptation to ditch
his clubs and jumped into the pristine beach for a romantic
stroll in search of his soggy balls. The
flight was too short to give Doug Walters
record a shake. The Tarago was
a bit squishy but thanks to Michael, it was tolerable. Although
the Country Club's culinary standards were not up to scratch,
the curry was not as good as
Isthmus
of Kra,
the croupiers were nice to Jeff and Pete; but not Jon and
Tam. Hence Pete walked away with the silverware - brimming
with cash. Poor Tam, once again, lost big bucks on and off
the course but fortunately the Penis putter was missing (last
seen somewhere in Jonni's bedroom).
Anyone who can win 7 skins for closest to the pin and managed
to play 36 holes without winning a hole deserves scorn and
pity.
Jonni
Stadler-Rizzuto
was a surprise - obviously the most improved player. Perhaps
because Cotter was not around to distract him, Jonni
proved there was more in him than beers and pizzas, as others
succumbed to fatigue, old age, and general mediocrity; particularly
Dave whom once again failed miserably on the championship-Sunday,
when leading by a Normanesque margin.
Simon was again runner up not bad effort considering he had
to sleep with Monster. Jeff showed glimpses of extraordinary
golfing skills in between shockers. Similarly, Andu went from
potentially sub 80-round to monstrous meltdown. Bernie Ned Kelly-Morris
lured us all to drop our guns then ran off with all the money.
Next year
an early favourite is
Scotland ,
now that we have a taste for links courses. A Pommy
sales rep has promised to organize it for me some thing like
a 5 day 5 game trip chipping around the UK
, via France
of course. If you have any suggestion,
post it on our website, www.billybarool.com
To all who attended, thank you for a great weekend. To
others who did not,“ you were briefly mentioned and missed.
Remember, to get on this prestigious invitational tournament,
try to be a good bloke and be nice to the Master. Steve, you
are still in trouble for losing the Cup's lid. Pete is very
mad with you.

Billy 2005 - Barwon Heads, March 19-20
|
Saturday
19th - 13th
Beach
Sunday 20th - The Sands
It
was great that while the golf standards have actually improved,
the drinking has not deteriorated - Pete
has raised the bar & at the other end, Jonni has lowered
his handicap by lots (no doubt a result of chucking early
& plenty). Sad that so many staggered to the loo several
times during the nights - those prostates have caught up with
our receding hairlines & spreading waistlines.
The
weekend began early & perfectly at a dodgy Barwon Heads
wine bar with Pete skolling an overflowing glass of Shadowfax
mopped up off the dining table & Phil abusing a shitty
waiter for failing Maths at school & refusing to deliver
special favors. Cards - plenty of hard-earned cash was thrown
around the table, but all ended up in Jeff & Pete's pockets
(???Uhmmm). For those of us cultured & manly enough to
wash the Romeo & Juliet cigar flavouring from the tonsils
with the Special Reserve Glenfiddich - that was lovely. The
grog & porterhouse went down deliciously easy, despite
the reluctance to obey the chef's instruction to rest the
meat before devouring.
The
golf was inspiring, devastating & entertaining - as usual.
Congratulations
to Pete - deserved winner of the prestigious Billy Cup (very
neglected condition by Goodwin - surely a penalty is warranted.
Where is the lid Steve?). The Cup skoll of a special Carlton
blend was brave! Congrats also to Monster & Moggy for
sharing the points for Chups Trophy - narrowly separated by
spirited skolling. Somewhat scary was Moggy's ability to open
his throat so wide & swallow so fast - well done. Despite
the dramatic cut in handicap, Jonni won the skins - that should
keep the ATO from the family home for a few years.
Thank
God for Jonni - now I am not the perennial softie that vomits
first. Congratulations to all for making it great weekend
(even though Phil spat the dummy & went to bed) &
the gentlemanly conduct you all displayed on course (Jonni
& Cotter will play together for all 3 rounds next year,
share the clubs & the bed).
Thanks
to Cotter was booking the accommodation & Finney for booking
the courses. A special welcome to our new Billy debutants
- Andu & Stu - both played very well but I'm not convinced
they drank enough. I hope both had a good time & will
come back for more next year.
Thanks
to Simon & everyone for the very special Pink Billy Putter
- I didn't know you boys were the sentimental type. Very much
appreciated (made no difference to my putting woes).

Remember - Everyone is a winner when you can spend a day on
the golf course & a night drinking. Visit

this year - who were missed (very briefly). Miles - I hope
you have quit those ciggis!

It
was another great weekend - Moonah Links was lovely, cards was fun,
beers were nice & the meat was fabulous. Best of all, the male-bonding
was great. Thanks to all - especially Phil for the entertainment
& food, the sick boys (JM & TC) for a brave effort, the
Kiwi who came from a long way, Jonni for reminding us all that our
golf swing is not that bad, Finney for keeping us all honest, Morris
for being a good dependable bloke, Goodi for being there & the
hole-in-one hot shot. Miles for the great lunch, Floppy for making
the effort on the last day, and Cres for his unique sense of humour
& making us feel so inadequately short. Congrats to the winners
- Goodi (Billy champ again), Cotter (Chups - courageous & narrow
winner - thanks to Finney for the gracious & sporting display),
Jonni (Happy Gilmore - who else more typifies the Happy spirits),
Moggi (Skinless Putter). Special Congrats to Steve for the golfing
highlight - HOLE IN ONE. That deserves a trophy (where is THE ball)
Looking forward to the 10th anniversary next year. All the discussed
options will be explored, feel free to give me other suggestions.
It will be memorable.

hi
lads the 7th annual BB tournament has come to a happy conclusion
for this year. everyone had a good time, bonding, drinking and chasing
birdies. the weather was great, the courses were in perfect conditions,
beers were cold, plenty of meat on the BBQ, the poker was tense
& boisterous, & no crying babies or nagging wives. All penalty
jugs were paid up & enjoyed. noboby adorned the dress this year,
but no one deserved to. the penis putter was taken out briefly for
one hole, but prematurely tugged away. congratutalions to Steve
for winning the most prestigious silver cup...a popular winner and
affable golfer. Simon, an honourable runner-up & whose dedication
to BB sets a high standard for all of us in flying back from New
Zealand, put up a good chase until choking in the last few holes...but
a great effort fighting off jet-lag to snuff out the challenge of
Moggi, who was out of sorts...not the same player who dominated
the tournament in the 90s, when he was a happy, carefree & single
sex machine. marriage has done him no good...forgetting to bring
the cup & in neglecting the sacred cup he has incurred a penalty...the
severity will be decided and handed down next year. Bernie was a
solid contributor all weekend, always a great team-man, content
and cheerful. a good bloke for beers & golf. Finney (golf Nazi),
frustratingly inconsistent, managed to fool the master, whom out
of sympathy & in the spirit of fair play, handsomely & foolishly
adjusted his handicap, who then returned the favour by clean up
the skins & run off with a wad of cash, grinning from ear to
ear. Cotter, after being solicited by dodgy blokes with bagfuls
of happy substances, drank hard & played hard, peaked too early,
couldn't cope with the demand of 2 days of golf & buggered off
to the other side of the peninsula, cruising on the ferry with his
wife....surely this has contravened the spirits of Billy and may
attract the master's wrath. A penalty may be issued for next year,
at the discretion of the ruling committee. However, he did put in
a commendable effort... Miles certainly lived up to his name in
clocking up 450 shots. for a golfer who had never before played
18 holes of golf, it was a magnificent achievement to play out 3
rounds, in such felicitous, courageous & resolute spirit. much
admired by all. The Master is very pleased with all of you. Next
year's tournament will be based at Barwon Heads & 13th Beach.
The 2nd half of Feb seems most suitable...now dont say you dont
get enough notice. Steve has volunteered to help me organise the
event...thanks very much. cheers PS. the buck's party is on 27th
April (details to follow...tentative plan is...cricket game, if
i can find a park, BBQ & beers, then dinner & more nocturnal
activities). hopefully i will see most of you lads there. i am sorry
we could not fit all of you into the small reception room.
